Asia has surpassed the UK as Ireland’s second biggest export market for seafood.

Exports to Asia totalled €96m last year, compared with €81m shipped to the UK.

Higher value delicacies including Irish oysters and shellfish are driving Asian growth, and pointing to massive growth for farmed Irish seafood, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM)’s latest Business of Seafood report shows.

The EU, excluding the UK, bought €373m of Irish fish last year. The marine sector is an important source of employment in coastal economies.

Average pay for crew on boats over 12 metres was €44,000 in 2018.
